Hello, It's been a long, long, time since I've posted to the forums. I'm doing a study and I'm seeking some general info as to the knowledge of "local church only" doctrine/teaching within IB ranks. I know there is a related post/article on site but please ignore that for now. My question is: Have you heard of a "local church only" doctrine/teaching? Does that phrase mean anything to you? -or- Are you familiar with what might be called a "local church only" position? Simply put, do you have knowledge of it and would you say it has importance in your beliefs? (No debate please.) Thanks for your comments.

John 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. I have 2 questions. 1) Why was Jesus saying he was in heaven while standing on earth? 2) Where did Enoch and Elijah go if they didn't go to heaven?

The Apostle Paul was a Jew. Paul was part of the Jewish remnant of the elect sons of israel. Every generation since Paul's age a remnant of Jews have been saved: Romans 11:1-12 At the time of Paul's ministry the Jews were enemies of the gospel, Romans 11:28 and Paul was severely persecuted by the Jews in almost every place he preached the gospel. This is common knowledge so I will only give one incident: Acts 12:44-50 The persecution endured by Paul from the hands of the Jews were physical, spiritual, and they blaspehemed and contradicted Paul at every opportunity. So, in spite of the extreme persecution that Paul went through, and after Paul plainly stated that the Jews …

There are some big words when it comes to biblical studies, such as: Exegesis - a critical explanation or interpretation of a text, particularly a religious text. "Biblical exegesis" is used for specificity because there are other areas of critical text. Hermeneutics - sometimes used interchangeably with exegesis, this is a wider discipline which includes written, verbal and nonverbal communication while exegesis focus on texts. Homiletics - is art of preaching or writing sermons. What I do here is not defined by any of the above, but incorporates a bit of each. I do look at the text of the Bible and explain to myself (and share here) what it means to me and how I am ab…

"Habakkuk" 18 century icon, Kizhi monastery, Karelia, Russia O LORD, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear! even cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save! (Habakkuk 1:2 KJV) There are many today who share this feeling of being left alone in spite of prayers for HELP!!! Much of what Habakkuk saw, we are seeing today. He complained to God about the problems his people faced – and the consequences. Why dost thou shew me iniquity, and cause me to behold grievance? for spoiling and violence are before me: and there are that raise up strife and contention. Therefore the law is slacked, and judgment doth never go forth: for the wicked doth compass about the …

Given the lack of a reliable systematic theology from a fundamental perspective (of which has come up several times on this forum as well), largely because the people who are capable of writing one are wholly engaged in other ministry or are unwilling to commit themselves to do so, I've decided to explore undertaking the task to write one. It's sure to be an extremely long (years if not decades) and arduous process. I'm of the mind that a good systematic theology should start with Theology Proper (Doctrine of God). Unfortunately it's probably my least favorite one to develop, but it is critical for a foundation. My purpose for this post is to canvas you here on OB for wha…

Several weeks ago, I walked into the office after a morning of study. Our pastoral staff men were finishing up a meeting in the conference room. I poked my head in and said with an exasperating sigh, “I feel SO behind!” The statement immediately struck two nerves—first the one in front of me. The faces of all the guys lit up with laughter, and they said, “So do WE!” I was amused that they were so comforted by the idea that I shared the feeling. The second nerve came from behind me, and it snuck up on me with the impact of a lightening bolt! My friend and deacon, Bill Bechter, was walking down the hallway behind me and had heard my comment. Bill has been a Christian and…

Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. Mark 9:23 Every Wednesday night we pray for people on our long prayer list. When my Dad was sick with cancer, we prayed the best we knew how, but Dad passed away anyhow. We are told to pray in faith and, as the verse above says, "all things are possible to him that believeth" ; does that mean my Dad could have been healed if someone's faith had been absolutely doubtless? What if you truly believed but Dad died anyway because it was his "time"; God's will. ?

I am working on an article about personal revival and I was doing some research online and came across this article: http://www.christianpost.com/news/study-born-53454/ I have seen this at work, so I know it's true that Christians have become complacent. Then I saw this article: http://www.christianpost.com/news/many-born-again-christians-hold-universalist-view-barna-finds-49883/ WOW. What has happened??? I knew things were bad, but wasn't quite expecting this.

Well, after all the craziness from dad's graduation to glory, plans are now set for Mom's trip to her new home. On Oct 26, I'm going to be driving her and her stuff and her cat to Louisiana to live with my sister and her family, who are very excited to have her come to stay. As I mentioned in another post, a good friend donated us the money for the trip, so I have gotten my truck reserved and my trip planned out. So just seeking prayer for this trip. We are going to be driving back, my wife and I, in our Tempo, which is questionable for such a long trip, so extra prayer there. Thanks for all the prayer up to this point-I believe it has done great things for us.

One rendition of “The Mercy Seat”, Ark of the CovenantBlessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. (Matthew 5:7) When it is in one shows compassion or forgiveness to someone when the one has total control to punish or harm, that is “mercy.” One of the synonyms of mercy that I love is "charity" - the word used for the love between God and man in the New Testament. When we believe there is a Creator, one who is capable of bringing into being and equally as capable to bring well-deserved punishing destruction, we would live in fear of that destruction. There is biblical proof of God's destruction, and greater biblical proof of His mercy. For we ourselves also …

October 06, 2015William Tyndale and The English BibleIf you read the Bible in English, you owe a debt of gratitude to William Tyndale. Today marks the anniversary of Tyndale’s execution at the stake for the “crime” of translating the Bible into English: The “father of the English Bible” was apparently born in a hamlet near the Welsh border about 1490. He arrived at Oxford with a gift for languages and began studying the writings of the greatest linguist in the world, Erasmus. He poured over Erasmus’ Greek New Testament and other writings, and he soon began lecturing from them. The Bible was still virtually unavailable in English, and an idea formed in William Tyndale’s mi…

"Anikonov thirst" by Эдуард Аниконов - Own work. Licensed under CC BY-SA 3.0 via Wikimedia CommonsBlessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. (Matthew 5:6) To understand this one we have to learn what righteousness is. We already know it is not self-righteousness – no one wants that and it’s too easily recognized from the outside, no matter how we look at ourselves. A little later in the Sermon on the Mount, Matthew tells us Jesus referred to a specific righteousness: But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:33) David went a bit further in Psalm …

Graphic from (and all rights reserved by) Heartlight, Inc.Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5 KJV) This one raised a lot of questions for me. Does meekness mean the same thing as humble? Why would I want to inherit the earth when it is in such bad shape. According to our leaders, mankind has made a mess of things and we have to make worldwide changes just to keep living on this accidental planet. Why in the world would I want to inherit problems. Of course, the spiritual truth is quite a bit different. The earth is the Lord’s according to 1 Corinthians 10:26. I must admit here that I like the way the KJV puts it – “fulness thereof”, rat…

"Life of Michael Angelo, 1912 - Pieta" by Michelangelo Licensed under Public Domain via Wikimedia Commons I don’t know whether or not I’ll go through the remaining Beatitudes – but this one fell open when I picked up my notebook again: Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. (Matthew 5:4 KJV) “Mourning” is defined as expression of deep sorrow for someone who has died – as in Pieta, where Mary is mourning the death of her son. But it’s not the life taken from someone that Jesus refers to here. Instead, I believe that after becoming aware of our spiritual need for God (see yesterday’s blog), we mourn because of our sin, we are not worthy to be near Him. I…

Sermon on the MountMosaic in Sant' Apollinare in Ravenna(my apologies for not knowing the source of this graphic) And seeing the multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his disciples came unto him: (Matthew 5:1 KJV) While searching for a graphic, I found this one, posted by an Andrea, but no name and no response from the website where I sought permission. I chose it because it was from an older mosaic and because of the composition. We are told that Jesus saw multitudes, then went to a mountain where his disciples came to Him. Did the multitudes hear the sermon? Questions without answers. In other places, the Bible carries specific answers. I chose …

Hello All, I grew up in the majority Muslim nation of Malaysia, where I was saved and heard about Jesus when I was a young child. I was baptized when I was 15 years old in a Bethelic Church in Malaysia as well. This was a water baptism with immersion, done in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believed in Christ first then was baptized. I saw no saving power in the water and did this simply out of obedience to the Word of God. I am about to join a local IFB church and was asked first to give a testimony of my relationship with Christ and then where I had been baptized. After hearing my response, the pastor of this church told me I would have to be baptize…

Bethlehem, Judean Mountains in background (permission requested)I have to answer some questions from my own studies. Remember, I’m very much as I found the Bereans: And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. (Acts 17:10-11 KJV) Yep – I’m going to search the scriptures before stating a viewpoint doesn’t match mine. I have much still to learn – and I really expect everyone does. We cannot know all there is about Go…

Weekly Sermon James 2:8-13 reads, “If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well: but if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors. For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all. For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law. So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty. For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”…

http://www.theblaze.com/contributions/this-gender-confused-boy-is-being-poisoned-and-abused-and-were-all-applauding/ So, why isn't this illegal? If mom got him a tattoo, she would go to jail. If she gave him booze, she would go to jail. Cigarettes? Jail. Estrogen Patches? HERO MOM! When will they tire of denying basic humanity? If you doubt the climate is changing and its man's fault, you're a Climate Change Denier, even if there is plenty of evidence behind you. If you are a Creationist, you are lambasted as a Science Denier, even though neither can be fully proven out and there is more evidence for creation than evolution. BUT, if you deny the reality of the DNA in you…

From Amazon’s Kindle StoreI think I’ve used that title – or something similar before – but it came to mind as I’ve finished 30% of an e-book by Jeffrey McClain Jones, “Seeing Jesus.” There are a couple of lines that I really like so far. One is from a former girlfriend who was just convinced Jesus was there and asked: “How is this possible” Philly shrugged. “Grandma prayed,” he said Another was when Phil was “amazed at how silent Jesus remained through most of the day. He didn’t preach or pry, or interrupt Philly’s work. Rather, he waited silently, patiently, always present, always ready and never perturbed.” A little later he thinks, “Everyone could use a serene supp…

Have you ever considered the value of helpful criticism? Have you ever known someone, who from your perspective, was too sensitive to criticism? I’ve been on both ends of this spectrum. At times, I’ve been the one criticized, and others thought I was too sensitive. At other times, I’ve seen friends criticized and thought they were being too sensitive. From the outside looking in, especially with non-credible criticism, it’s easy to take a nonchalant attitude, “Take half a baby-aspirin and go to bed. You’ll be ok…” Yet, the receiving end of criticism, for a serious leader, is weighty—and not for selfish reasons. Sure, criticism hurts, discourages, and often touches sens…

Graphic from (and all rights reserved by) Heartlight, Inc. A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. (Psalms 24:1-4 KJV) It is comforting, isn’t it, to think that the earth is in the Lord’s hand. That He cares for what happens here, for all of us. Please, do not become too comfortable until you get acquainted with with God and His attributes.…
