I am just curious how you define legalism. What is an example of a modern-day Pharisee? Who fits it best?

Our Pastor asked us last night at church who was writing Hymns, good solid childrens books, poetry etc today??? Where are all the down the line bible believing people willing to step us and provide our children with these things. We talk about the greats in years gone by such as Fanny Crosby etc who supplied us with amazing hymns poetry etc. So I ask you do you know of current people writing recording such things???

Country music has always included gospel music. Here is an album of country gospel music. https://www.pandora.com/artist/various-artists/country-gospel-greats/ALZZzvqv5jv5jt6 And here is one of the most beautiful songs. It was a slave song included in a collection of songs and published in Slave Songs of the United States in 1867. Pretty much forgotten it was revived in the movie, "Oh,Brother, Where Art Thou?"

The Hymnal that we sing that-says it is well with my soul, shouldn’t it be, it is well with my spirit. For when we were lost, we were body and soul, and now that we are saved, we are in the body soul and spirit. Just checking

Rock music exalts the flesh. Does it sometimes sound "powerful"? Here's why http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_chord

Does anyone know where I can download some good music? I especially like songs that were sung and recorded in local church services that churches have put on their website. My church puts music online: http://www.cmrbc.org As does Shawnee Baptist in Louisville: http://www.shawneebaptist.org I was wondering if anyone knew of others. I like to download them and then burn my own CD's to listen to. Thanks, Ramba29

You guessed it - which are more Biblical: Hymns or Choruses? I believe overall hymns are. There is more doctrinal content to them, they were not written for ecumenical purposes, they were not designed to be endlessly repetitive as many choruses are, the majority of choruses that I have heard are rock music based, many of them are charismatic in doctrinal content - even if many others are not aware of the terminology, and the wording of many of them are based on modern Bible versions. That's some things for starters. By the way, I am not against sound choruses - but I prefer sound hymns. I do not have a problem with those choruses that are doctrinally-sound and ar…

It is truly amazing to me how far the church has come in America....I heard an illustration that the church always stays a certain distance from the world; but that as the world gets worse, the church follows at the same distance...to where now, the church stands today where the world stood 40 years ago. We don't have cable tv, only regular broadcast stations, but after watching a black and white Sherlock Holmes DVD ( :D ) hubby was flipping through channels and on a PBS station John Denver was having a concert like event (he was my mom's favorite until we started going to church when I was about eight years old, then she threw all the records out.) What amazed me is …

Have you ever walked into Walmart or another store and heard a song that was other than a Christian Hymn, and you started singing or humming along with it because you used to listen to that song? Well, count that problem solved! When your foot starts tapping the beat, start singing a well known hymn such as Amazing Grace, or Jesus Loves Me :sing:. It might not work the first few times you try, but you have to somehow tune those songs out in order to be seperate from the world. You could even try quoting a verse that you have memorized , or start praying :pray . If you ACTUALLY try, it will be easy.
No Rock or CCM.
Rock = Rock and Roll music or lyrics. CCM = Christian Contemporary Music What other rules are there, just to clarify things?

I typed up this question on OBL and am getting some interesting responses. I thought you bunch of debaters might like to give this one a go, too! Recently I heard my 4 year old singing a popular S.S. song and it got me thinking about this question again. Through the years, as we've been lead by the Lord to different churches (and because of moving) some when we were new Christians at more liberal churches....and later 2 different very conservative IFB churches, I have heard the song "I have the joy, joy,joy...down in my heart--where? down in my heart..." then they will tack on this other little "verse"...."and if the devil doesn't like it, he can sit on a tack, sit…

So much has been said about Christian rock, ccm, southern gospel, classical music, etc. My concern is the very subtle way that supposedly mild secular music can enter into a Christian's life and then lead them into other more destructive forms of music....I guess what I'm trying to say is that the flesh is never satisfied.... that there is ALWAYS a danger when we open the door just a peak, then satan steps his dirty foot in and we have "given place to the devil"; we have made provision for the flesh, so to speak. I've hear young and old alike say that the old "bubble gum" rock, like groups from the 60's and early 70's is harmless COMPARED to what we have today. Isn't t…

I'm sure someone's done this sometime in the past, but let's do it again! What is your favorite hymn? Feel free to post the lyrics. I'm going to do two, since I'm the OP. Saved by the Blood Saved by the blood of the Crucified One! Now ransomed from sin and a new work begun, Sing praise to the Father and praise to the Son, Saved by the blood of the Crucified One! Refrain Glory, I’m saved! Glory, I’m saved! My sins are all pardoned, my guilt is all gone! Glory, I’m saved! Glory, I’m saved! I am saved by the blood of the Crucified One! Saved by the blood of the Crucified One! The angels rejoicing because it is done; A child of the Father, joint heir wi…

I read this article that studied the importance of Congregational Singing in church and I wondered how important is it to your congregation? Some churches have congregations that can really SING! while others prefer to sit while a choir of a certain few people sing. How does your church deal with singing/music? Here is a link to the PDF article that piqued my interest... etd-submit.etsu.edu/etd/theses/available/etd-0330102-011956/unrestricted/BennettR041902.pdf -

This is something that I've forgotten the argument against such things. Give me a good Bible answer. Tell me why such amazing ministries and music is so evil and wrong.

Should Christians sing the Psalms, claiming the promises to believing Israel? Or should we sing them with reservation, because the promises are not for us - the church? From another thread - I was surprised that Farouk should bring dispensationalism into the thread. The Psalms are freely quoted in the epistles written to the churches. We are commanded to sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. Col. 3:15And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful. 16Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with g…

My wife majored in piano at Bob Jones University, so I got to love classical music there along with sacred Christian music. I love the hymns by Fanny Crosby and John Wesley which glorified God! Music should exalt Jesus Christ! I also like the music performed in the show Faith for the Family which used to air on Saturday night in Greenville, S.C. :bonK:
