Obeying Your Fathers and Mothers (Proverbs 1:7-10)

John Young

Obedience to your parents as children is a fundamental building block in the childhood of any person. On the practical level this passage emphasizes the importance of obeying the instruction and boundaries good parents can instill into their children as they grow. Yet also, on a deeper level, the passage challenges the wise to recognize our Spiritual Father (God) and Mother (The Scriptures).

In all this we see also the importance to have good parents to be instructed by because who our parents will determine who we can become (Good or Bad parents can only teach us what they know). As we go deeper, we see how we can also follow other "father figures" and "mother figures" in addition to our physical and Spiritual parents. We show also how to determine what your parent figures are in your life and how you can determine if the deserve this role and if they are good or bad.

(Preached Sunday Evening, 12-11-2022, by Pastor John Young, at Maranatha Bible Baptist Church, 16990 S 38th St, Mendon, MI 49072, Between Fulton and Menden in Wakeshma Township, Near Kalamazoo and Battle Creek in South West Michigan, https://www.facebook.com/MbbcFulton)

Proverbs 1:7-10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction. 8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: 9 for they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck. 10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

There is nowhere in the Bible that the Word of God is referred to as our spiritual mother.

Luke 8:21 And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it.

Yes, Jesus' spiritual brethren are those who obey the Word of God - that in no way equates with the Word of God being our spiritual mother in any sense...

The "Word of God" not literally our Mother yet there is plenty of sense to consider the scripters, The Bible, as such in the context of Spiritual mothers. The Word of God comes to us from our "spiritual mother" Jerusalem and teaches us the word of God just as the scripters teach us His word. In the context of Proverbs it is not necessary to spend too much time developing this concept but its there for anyone to consider treating the scripters, The Bible, as type of "Spiritual mother" who nourishes and teaches us the Word of God, Growing and nourishing us in our faith.

2 Timothy 1:5 when I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith that is in thee, which dwelt first in thy grandmother Lois, and thy mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in thee also.
2 Timothy 3:15 and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.
Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Psalm 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
Galatians 4:28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.
Romans 9:9 For this is the word of promise, At this time will I come, and Sara shall have a son.
Galatians 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Micah 4:2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

I'm not stretching the scriptures. I'm simply applying one aspect of them in the context of what the passage of  Proverbs is teaching. Its the same vein as Paul's allegory and in context of proverbs 1's promise that the scriptures provides more as you carefully study it more.

Very similar to what the Catholics do:

"Mary is my mother. She is your mother, too. Before Jesus died on the cross, He saw Mary and one of His disciples before Him. He said to Mary, “Woman, behold your son.” To His his disciple He said, “Behold, your mother.” (from John 19: 26 and 27) He assigned this disciple (John) to watch over and protect Mary. The Catholic Church also looks at this event as Jesus giving Mary to all believers as our Mother. She is also the Mother of the Church".

(Taken from How Does Mary Help us as our Spiritual Mother? - Blessed Catholic Mom "Do what He tells you.")

Sorry. I'm not going there. Too much of a stretch.

You refer to Proverbs 1:8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

And why only allow for the scriptures to be our spiritual mother? What about the father? Aren't the scriptures also referred to as "instructions"? Based on your logic wouldn't Proverbs 1:8 along with 2 Timothy 3:16 allow the scriptures to be our spiritual father as well?

2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

John 1 makes it clear. Jesus Christ is the word. I am comfortable with that. I do not need to allegorize it into a mother or father.

John 1:1-3; 14 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Jesus is the Word. God said it, I believe it, that settles it. I don't need to (nor should I) transpose that onto anyone else.

The sermon makes it pretty clear and obvious about what is being said. If you want to take it another way than it was given then that is on you.

    • Please check out this thread again. I updated it with new (good) versions of the PDF books. Explanation above.
    • The Song Of The Redeemed I like it when something in a passage gets explained and it opens up. I’m sure I knew some of this before (though this old brain gets forgetful), but it struck me more today. Rahab, when used as a symbol through the Old Testament, refers to Egypt. Now read this: Isaiah 51:9-10 Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Art thou not it that hath cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon? Art thou not
    • Thy Gentleness Hath Made Me Great Was just reading some poetry by king David, and came across one of my favourite verses again. Focus on the last part of this verse: Psalms 18:35 Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. In the world’s eyes, we may not be much or accomplish much, but in God’s eyes, we are great - because of Him. Who we are in Christ never changes from day to day, so we can alwa
    • In The Day When I Cried Sometimes we think it is presumption to ask the Lord to answer a prayer today. Though if a prayer does seem more urgent, we may have asked the Lord to perfect (complete) that which concerneth us (from Psalm 138:8). If we have a need or a trouble, we may pray for it, expecting God to answer it in His own timing. But what happens if the need seems more urgent, if the trouble we are facing seems more dire, perhaps even time-sensitive? Is it presumptuous to pray, asking
    • Does God Delight In You? Psalms 18:19 He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me. If you have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for salvation, you are accepted in Him by the Father - and you therefore become a child that He delights in. Proverbs 3:12 For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth. We may not like the application of this second verse to ourselves, but He corrects us beca
    • Reading The Scriptures   There are two main words for know (and its forms) in the New Testament.   1) Strong’s #1492, eido. This word basically has the idea of head knowledge, knowing about something.   2) Strong’s #1097, ginosko (from the root word, gnosis, knowledge). This word has the idea of knowing about something personally, personally experiencing what you know about.   Looking up every time the word know (or a form thereof) occurs in the NT (with these ba
    • Good to see the two studies on this theme still here in the Sermons section. My websites got repeatedly hacked two years ago. We lost all content and had to rebuild from scratch. These two were ones I still hadn't put up again. A bit of copy and paste, and there we go!
    • DRAW NEAR TO GOD   Song of Songs 1:4 Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.   The above verse is a prayer or desire of the believer desiring to fellowship with her Lord.   I love how the Word of God uses the idea of God drawing us to Himself.   Firstly, through His death on the cross and the preaching of the G
    • No debate. God told the first man and woman,  husband and wife,  that they would die if they disobeyed Him. They disobeyed Him. They died.  The time that passed before this was physically observed was considerably longer than 75 years, right ?  So also today,  do not look at what is seen with the eyes, nor listen to what is heard with the ears (carnal, fleshly, worldly, physical),  rather trust ABBA YHVH.
