Are You Wearing Filthy Garments?

Galations 2:20

“Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. And he answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment. ” (Zechariah 3:3-4)

The world places a great emphasis on outward appearance, often neglecting their inner spiritual heart condition. People often choose to either adorn themselves with the latest and greatest fashions or choose to dress down themselves in grunge attire. Both are taking outer appearance to the extreme in worldly fashion and neither are necessarily honoring to God.

Joshua was clothed in filthy garments before the angel. Does this mean he took on the grungy look common to many in a younger mindset geared to the world’s popular opinion and fashion trends? No, Joshua’s filthy garments were an inner indication of a spiritual blight, not first and foremost an issue with His outer attire.
Joshua’s heart was filled with sin. Sin is an evil ogre in the sight of the Lord and His angels. All sin must be properly addressed and dealt with according to the truth of God’s Word. NOBody can come into the presence of the Lord with a sinful condition in their heart, as He is holy and perfect and knows no sin. Salvation adorns the sinner in a new white rOBe, a Christ like garment.

The Lord promised Joshua a change of raiment. That promise of OBtaining new raiment or a new covering, or propitiation, is available today for any man, woman, or child who asks in faith. Whosoever calls upon Him in faith can have that new covering. Saving faith in the atoning work of Christ changes our inner heart condition from wicked and sinful to adorning us in freedom from sin and liberty in Christ.

“And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21)

This new raiment is a spiritual covering for desperately wickedness and sin in man’s heart and not a new outer shell or covering for the physical body. However, once this raiment begins to seep through this softened heart it also affects a person’s outer persona and actions as the fruits of the spirit are manifested in the Christian’s life.

Yes, the Lord is intimately concerned about our inner heart condition, more so than our outward presentation. However, both the inner heart condition and the outer shell of the Christian life are important. One involves our honest presentation before the Lord, and the other is how the Christian is viewed by others, as he navigates through the world. The inner state of a man’s heart can be vastly different than how he chooses to present himself to those around him but the Lord always knows the true condition of our heart. What does your heart condition look like to the Lord?

To Contemplate Further:

The Lord always intimately knows the spiritual condition of your heart. Does your heart personify an aroma of Jesus Christ in, on and about yourself to Him and to others around you? Or do you need a new garment?

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

    • Thank you for the fine message on Romans 1:16 & 17 concerning the gospel of Christ; true belief in Christ, repentance, humbleness in the sight of God, and salvation in the work of Christ, and His righteousness, alone. Thank you also for your four thoughts in soul-winning efforts, your love for soul-winning, and bringing out the fruits of repentance. Keep up your soul-winning preaching and efforts. • A wonderful devotion and commentary of Joseph Bro. Alan. I have always loved the story of Joseph, not just for the story, but also for the inspiration his life is in so many ways. It is not limited to simply old testament history, but gives us today the inspiration to overcome under even the most adverse of life's situations. While Joseph is certainly a type of Christ, when viewed in this capacity he exhibits the power and determination to use his life situations for God's glory as well as

    • Brethren, I would like to add this note on the interpretation of the two dreams of Joseph  in Genesis 37:5-11.  Alan The Unbelief of the Dreams of Joseph by Pastor Steven Anderson Pastor Steven Anderson does not believe that two dreams of Joseph is fulfilled in the proper interpretation of the symbolism in Revelation 12:1-6. Pastor Anderson states, “So because of that dream that Joseph had, people will often look at Revelation chapter 12, and they see a woman clothed with the

(Hebrews 6:4-6) There will come a point in every person's heart where they will NEVER repent and accept the message of the
    • Jim, I am glad to hear that the devotion was a blessing to you. As with many other saints, the life, the character, and the moving incidents in the life of Joseph, are an inspiration.  Throughout the life of Joseph, we can see God moving His hand in the life of Joseph to use him for the deliverance of the Jewish race, the deliverance of the Egyptians, and we can see the character of Christ. Truly, Romans 8:28 is evident in Joseph's life, "And we know that all things work together
