Be Ye steadfast...

1 Corinthians 15 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (v. 58) The Lord would have us to be steadfast, which has to do with our walk, and unmovable, which has much to do with our standing. Jesus was steadfast when he set His face toward Jerusalem (Lk. 9:51), He was determined that nothing would change His course until He got where He had determined to go.

Hell

Hell “Therefore hell hath enlarged herself, and opened her mouth without measure: and their glory, and their multitude, and their pomp, and he that rejoiceth, shall descend into it.” Isa. 5:14 In our text verse, we see one of the saddest verses in the Bible. Hell always makes room for more; she is never full. In his book, “End Times” J. Dwight Pentecost says that scientist speculate that hell may be a planet. They say that the hottest fire there is, is a black fire that burns so hot

Stubble instead of straw

This is the place for devotions, am I right? Here goes: Exodus 5 Stubble instead of Straw “So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw” (v.12) The Egyptians were tyrannical taskmasters, and their desire to make things hard for Israel actually weakened their own cause more than they ever seemed to think it would. When wickedness seeks to hinder righteousness, it always hurts itself in the long-run. In t

Wonderful

"Wonderful" By Billy Sunday "His name shall be called Wonderful" -- Isaiah 9:6 IN olden times all names meant something, and this is still the case among Indians and all other people who are living in a primitive way. Whenever you know an Indian's name and the meaning of it, you know something about the Indian. Such names as Kill Deer, Eagle Eye, Buffalo Face and Sitting Bull tell us something about the men who possessed them. This tendency to use names that are expressive still crops ou

Cast thy burden upon the LORD.

Taught a few weeks ago at a Wednesday night prayer meeting of church. Psalm 55:22: Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved. When we meet for prayer, we bring all our needs and burdens and cast them upon the Lord. 1 Peter 5:8 promises a load of burdens on us all, for the devil is, as a roaring lion, walking about, seeking whom he may devour. Burdens came into the world because of sin. Yet one verse before, we learn that we can

Enduring temptation

Taught at church March 24, 2010. James 1:12-16 Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. (13) Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: (14) But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. (15) Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is

True Discipleship

DISCIPLESHIP “Followers of Christ”. If we were to take a survey, and ask born again believers “What does it take to be a disciple” I am afraid that many would answer that a disciple is merely a follower of Christ. Though this is true in one sense, it falls short in another; to follow Christ--to really follow Him--entails much more than walking in a crowd that is headed in the same direction--it is giving Him our all, our entire self, from a heart of dedication and a faith that is sincere,

Salvation is of the LORD

Taught March 10 and 17 at church. Jonah 2:9: "Salvation is of the LORD." Salvation can mean temporal deliverance or eternal salvation. The Hebrew word is "yesh-oo'-aw"--almost the same as the word for Jesus ("yesh-u-a"). In Hebrew, there is here one extra letter in the word for salvation, which adds to the sense of not only physical deliverance, but all kinds of salvation. All are of the LORD. Other verses that say the same thing: Psalm 3:8; 37:39; Acts 4:12; Rev. 7:20. The LORD's Work G

Needed Afflictions

Daniel 3 (Devotion) “He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.” (v. 25) In Daniel three, we have one of the more interesting Bible stories in the entire Bible. When Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were thrown into the fiery furnace, they had a unique experience; they had the privilege of walking with Jesus! Had they not went through the fire, they nev

The power of sin

A Sermon (Jail ministry) “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?” (1 Cor. 15:55) Never underestimate the power of Satan. He is wily; He is deceitful; he is a destroyer. The devil has deceived every man that ever lived, since the beginning of time! No one has ever escaped his mighty grasp—no one that is, except Jesus. The greatest of men have fallen to Satan’s tricks; the greatest generals, conquerors of the world, have all fallen to the wooing and

True Friendships

True Friendships This is the message I preached on February 15th at the Gospel Mission. Webster's 1828 Dictionary gives this as his first definition for friend: "One who is attached to another by affection; one who entertains for another sentiments of esteem, respect and affection, which lead him to desire his company, and to seek to promote his happiness and prosperity; opposed to foe or enemy." He also defines friendly as: "Having the temper and disposition of a friend; kind; favorable; d

From: A Psalm Of Guidance (Psalm 25) - Part One

A Psalm Of Guidance (Psalm 25) - Part One This is the first of seven Acrostic Psalms (see also Psalms 34, 37, 111, 112, 119, and 145), where each verse (or each section of eight verses in the case of Psalm 119) begins with a different letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Psalms 25:1 A Psalm of David. Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. The Bible, especially the Old Testament, refers to various people lifting up their hands, their eyes, their voices, but here we have the Psalmist lifting up h

Why God Created Man

"What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?" Psa. 8:4 Has anyone ever asked you “Why am I here?” or “What is life all about?” The Bible has the answers to those questions. The Bible says that we were created by God, for His pleasure (Rev. 4:11) and for His glory (Isa. 43:7). JOB asks "What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him? and that thou shouldest set thine heart upon him?" (JOB 7:17) The Bible gives us at least three reasons as to wh
